Teacher’s Day in Taiwan

September 27, 2015 Sanne Tea

Taiwan Teachers’ Day is recognized on September 28th. This day is also the birth date of the great Chinese philosopher and teacher, Confucius (孔子). Confucius is considered the embodiment of the Chinese moral, family, and education philosophy. In Taiwan, and most of Asia today, there is a strong belief in the importance of family and education.

Confucius (551-479 BC) believed that people should live a life of benevolence. In order to ensure that future generations would adhere to this life philosophy, Confucius stated that elders and parents had the responsibility of passing down this attitude.  Youth, thus was taught to respect their elders. In addition, education was an important aspect of building the foundation of an individual.

Teacher’s Day is recognized in Taiwan, but it is no longer a holiday. It is common, however, for teachers to receive gifts of “thanks” from their students and their parents.
